Dilemma Coming Up - Help please
« on: March 01, 2025, 14:34:32 »
My fantastic Santa Fe Premier SE Auto Euro5 (non ULEZ) with a full service history and 38k on the clock will be 10 years old in May. In addition its 1 owner/driver will be 77 and plans to continue driving, whereas the wife plans to give up driving her 5 year old Mazda Auto CX-3 Euro6 with 19k mileage. We live just outside a ULEZ zone but rarely cross into it. We both love the high-up SUV diesel experience but our annual mileage is now only 5k, so do we keep the Santa Fe (pay any ULEZ and forseen repairs) and sell the Mazda or vice-Vera or sell both and get either a used Tucson or a Mazda CX-5 petrol?

At 5,000 miles/year a diesel isn't suitable and may start giving expensive problems - but switching cars will always cost money - you should look seriously at selling both and getting an EV.

Thank you RT, your wise words are much appreciated. You are right to point out that continuing to run the SF under these conditions is asking for trouble. I must have either been lucky or Hyundai designed and screwed together a very reliable product, perhaps a bit of both. As to your sound recommendation of an EV replacement, it will need to support a monthly weekend round trip of 218 miles, which the destination currently does not offer a charging point and also needs to include the ability to transport a Mountain E-bike inside the cabin. Any suggestion would be most welcome.
